With the start of what promises to be a significant year both here and worldwide, I have consulted the Runic Oracle to obtain guidance on what the path of destiny holds for us. While the most common spread is the Three Rune Spread, given the energies and the importance of the coming year, I have used the One Year Spread to forecast what may be on the horizon.

Theme Rune – Laguz Reversed – This is the rune of Water which can both give and take life. The overall theme that this Rune brings is a warning that a tempest is coming –which seems to be mirrored throughout the runes for the year. Much negative energy on all levels, personal, financial, international which will require each one of us to find our safe harbor, drop anchor, and ride out the storm.

January through March – Nauthiz Reversed

This shows the limited choices that we have in solving our issues during this time. Barriers and delays are abundant on all levels particularly in the battle between “wants” and “needs”. Real danger exists in excess; going to extremes in world affairs? It is important that we actually identify what is needed to bring things into balance rather than believing that there is some magic bullet to make things right.

April – June – Othila

This is a time to truly take stock of what we possess, as a nation, as people, and as world citizens both in terms of material and spiritual value. During this time I see many people taking a long look at those things which are permanent such as personal values, relationships, etc. and those which are fleeting. This could mean that many of the illusions that have been put forth about what should matter (political ideology, national or international supremacy, a perceived threat from abroad) may be seen for the straw men that they are. How we choose to use this knowledge will vary from person to person and nation to nation.

1st Six Months Bridge – Sowelo – This is the rune of wholeness and clarity and is both appropriate and timely as it also denotes the end of winter and the start of the warmth of the year. During these first six months, we may get a chance to see “the funny old man behind the curtain” (figuratively and, possibly, literally) as some scandals/revelations are going to illuminate exactly how the financial crisis occurred on a global scale and who or what stands to profit by keeping things unsettled. Failures in governments will also come to light-perhaps with some shocking results.

July – September – Thurisaz Reversed

Things will be unsettled as past, present and future seem to be piling up on each other. The way forward is not clear, the path is painful and chaos is likely. Between violent weather, geological upheavals, possible civil unrest turning violent, and the specter of an international issue, it certainly could be a long, hot summer. Avoid obsessions and remember the gateway between past and future is the present.

October – December – Algiz Reversed

Though traditionally a rune for protection, reversed Algiz indicates our vulnerability to all the negative energies swirling around us such as political attack adds, continued financial stress, and even the worry about the Mayan Calendar. Sadly, this may also make a period of decline across the globe. Emotions will be on edge, projects will fail, and a general sense of malaise could lead to some rather desperate actions.

2nd Six Months Bridge – W unjo Reversed

Not surprisingly, the theme for the second half of the year can be summed up in one word: frustration. Yet, if we are willing to look at the past and see where the blockages to growth began it is possible to gain some insight on some of the issues. However, there is a sense of a karmic debt that needs to be resolved and it is likely to occur during these later months.

Ultimately, though, it is for each us to take this knowledge of what may be and find our own light to create what CAN be.

As then tenth anniversary of 9-11 approaches, I find myself pondering exactly what doors may be opened on that date, the impact that this will bring-both nationally and on the world stage, and what the outcome might be. With announcements that new “credible” threats exist, the growing instability through much of North Africa and the Middle East, and a growing divide at home, this date may be a harbinger for many dramatic events, both in the short and long term.

It seems both fitting and proper to turn to the Runic Oracle to seek counsel on this matter. Although the Oracle is most often used for personal advice, the scope is only limited by the question put to it. My new book, The RuneChest, discusses the Oracle’s history and how to interpret its advice.

The first step in any casting is to pose a question: In this case, the question I have set before the Oracle is: What do we need to know about 9-11-11? I will use the Three Rune Spread. Read right to left, the first rune deals with the here now (think the current state of the matter), the second rune addresses the challenge which must be faced in the matter, and the third rune speaks to the future course of the matter.

Let us begin:

First Rune Hagalaz – This rune symbolizes archetypal and primal energy that disrupts the existing order and causes abrupt change. The term “radical discontinuity” had been used to describe its effect. Hagalaz reflects that energy that seems to be swirling around us, toppling the old and disrupting the existing order. The widening political and philosophical divide in the country is certainly reflected here. Much of what we have taken for granted is being shaken-particularly concerning our place in the world and our financial security. The stage is being set for a karmic wake-up which could strip away the fabric of the world as we know it.

Second Rune Algiz Reversed -This rune in the reversed position speaks to the challenge that we are facing as growth and progress is going to be stymied. How we meet this challenge could well dictate the future of prosperity in this country. This rune cautions that we are vulnerable to a strong negative force which will shake our existing plans. Since the force itself cannot be stopped, how we deal with obstructions and are willing to wait to move ahead when the way is clear.

Third Rune Jera – This rune, the rune of the future path shows that we will reap the “fruits” of our efforts in the past. It also is a gentle reminder of the cycle of birth-death-rebirth. The path ahead again mirrors that which I have written about in other articles, namely that the old and outmoded orders have come to the end of their course and that which is to be harvested (in the literal sense) will be a transformation rather than a continuation.

Taken as a whole, the Oracle counsels that this anniversary will strip away much of the façade that we have been dealing with, particularly in the areas of financial and national security. The reality that we will see will be marked with a lot of negative energy in the near term, yet if we can be patient (not the strongest trait in our national make-up), we will be able to move ahead when the storm clears. Even at that, however, the transformation of these outmoded systems, organization, and even beliefs, will still be dramatic and, like the phoenix, we will be called on to rise from the ashes of the past.

Thus Spake The Runes.

From the article I wrote in the beginning of August, Summer 2011 Predicitons, it is apparent that those predictions are playing out with accuracy. Astrology can pinpoint major events on a global level and the direction things will be heading.  I used progressed charts starting with July 4th to the present to calculate the areas that will affect the US and other countries, as well.

September may bring Neptune’s wrath in the form of a hurricane that shows up almost unannounced.  Abnormal amounts of rain will inundate the east coast with tornado warnings.  Flooding, gas leaks bursting water pipes will be in the headline news.  This Fall make sure your own home water systems are in good repair, as the negativity of Neptune in retrograde promises water and liquid issues, especially on the east coast.

There may well be a dramatic fall from power that will stun the world. Outmoded governments will continue to topple and many around the globe will come to realize that much of what they believed was mere illusion. The financial world is still shaky and even if a debt ceiling agreement is reached, the ramifications of the debate will echo loudly both here and abroad.

From my Debt Ceiling article (referring to Jupiter going retrograde on Aug.30th):

“This influence can be felt two or three weeks out-again right during the final days before the deadline. Jupiter’s emphasis on law and moral authority is going to be reflected by the continued deadlock of two groups, each of whom is saying “I am right”.”

And from my yearly predictions back in Dec. of 2010, referring to the third quarter of the year:

“Of even greater significance is the Uranus Retrograde that beings on July 9th and carries through to December 9th. This is the textbook aspect for the phrase “Expect the unexpected”. Outward behavior, particularly by public figures, may be “just for public consumption” and may mask hidden feelings and agendas. Trust in all institutions is going to take a real hit during this time, and many of us will be left wondering exactly where we fit in.”

Lou’s newst book The RuneChest just came out and is available at Amazon.

Runes have held a special place in the fabric of Northern European, Celtic and Anglo-Saxon cultures. Serving as both a linguistic and mystic device, these ancient symbols reach across the boundaries of time and space to ensnare both the scholar and the seeker in the quest to understand and interpret the messages that they bring. This volume blends the traditional runic meanings with contemporary interpretations to provide a new voice to the runic oracle bringing it forward into the 21st century for beginners and skilled seekers alike.

The RuneChest looks both to the past and the present in order to provide a meaningful guide to the future. The Oracle has never been, nor will ever be static and, for those seeking guidance from its lessons, the interpretations that I have put forth in this work will hopefully bring counsel and direction to the readers of today, just as the Oracles of antiquity gave advice to those who sought them out in places such as Delphi.

Excerpt from The RuneChest:

“The desire to gain a greater understanding of our world and our role in it is probably stronger now, in the 21st century, than it has been for centuries. As we are bombarded with more and more information through the Internet and other media sources, it has become increasingly difficult to sort out crucial answers to the issues which confront us on our life path. Interpersonal communication has been replaced in large part by email and texting; time for reflection gets lost in our ever more hectic daily schedules.

With so little time to focus on those life choices which we confront, it is small wonder that it seems that we lurch from one decision to the next, hoping for the best outcome but still questioning whether or not we are truly understand what we are doing.

It is here that the Runic Oracle can provide the “compass” to reconnect us to the innermost working of spirit and those forces which propel our universe. Giving guidance and re-centering our energies on the tasks which face us, the Runes have again fulfilled their unique role as Oracle just as they were used nearly two thousand years ago.”

This book will provide a fresh point of view to the art of runecasting, honoring both the ancient and historic roots from whence the Runes themselves sprang forth and the expanded horizons and thoughts of those who brought these timeless symbols forward into the light of modern day.

Survival Guide for Mercury Retrogrades

For modern day online psychics who use Runes for their clients, the question of whether or not to include the blank twenty-fifth rune, or Odin’s Rune as it is also called, as part of psychic readings. Traditionally, the Elder Futhark, which is the oldest form of the Runic Alphabet, only had twenty-four symbols.

At some point in the Rune revival and rediscovery of the twentieth century, a blank rune was included to symbolize the role of omnipotent fate in forecasting the future. Online psychics may or may not use this blank rune although a current trend seems to favor including it in psychic readings that can be obtained through various online phone psychic sites.

When the blank Rune appears in a psychic reading, it signifies that the Unknowable and Universal power is truly in motion in a person’s life.  There are those moments in a life when the winds of the future swirl and someone can feel their very being caught up and tossed forward towards the future.

A skilled psychic rune reader can recognize this sea change and help guide the client in understanding that this unformed potential is moving in their life and directing them onward towards unseen and important destinations. Online or otherwise, this psychic portent is a powerful reminder that the mystery of the journey can be, at times, more important than the destination itself.

Traditional runic practitioners disagree with the inclusion of this “modern” rune, preferring to base their rune castings on the original twenty-four character Futhark. Modern, New Age, or contemporary (all of these terms can be interchanged) psychics on the other hand favor using the blank rune.

It is their position that in the realm of the twenty-first century a greater consideration of the effect of the Unknowable is important when doing online psychic readings, whether chat based, online phone psychics, or through email readings. Online psychics, using the resources of the internet and psychic reading sites, have incorporated the technology of the future with the wisdom of the past to provide the guidance through their online psychic readings that more and more people seek.

Whether an online psychic is of the traditional or contemporary school of rune casting, the impact of Odin’s Rune is always considered; whether to use it in a psychic reading or not, and ultimately with the seeker’s best interests at heart.

I’ve been asked countless times through the years “How can the Runes help me if I have an issue at work/school/ etc.?” While it is always preferable to consult the runes when you have no other distractions, sometimes the issue at hand just can’t wait until those “quiet times”. So my answer to the question is: “The Oracle can be a guide on the fly, so to speak, and provide direction to the matter at hand”.

The type of casting that works best in these pressure situations is the single or “Odin’s Rune”. All you need to do is to focus on the issue and mentally ask “What is it about this situation that I need to know?” The Runic Oracle will provide you with an answer that will allow you focus on the potential that the matter holds and, in doing so, will help guide your actions in responding to it.

I have carried a set of “pocket runes” in my brief case for years for just these kinds of situations These small sets are available from a wide variety of sources both in the “brick-and mortar” world and on the Internet as well. When a situation arises that seems to call for guidance, it is never difficult to take five minutes or so, close my office door, and pull a rune.

As with any type of activity, the more you use the runes, the easier it will be to allow yourself to be “open” to the messages that the Oracle will provide. Obviously, there will be those matters that require a deeper, more comprehensive casting.  For the immediate future, however, the single rune reading can calm the mental waters until a more thorough reading can be done under better conditions.

A second use for Runes during the work day (or school, etc) is a source of meditation. How many times have you found yourself, literally, wound so tight under the pressure of a situation that you felt you would snap? By mentally forming a picture of the rune and concentrating on its meanings, you can help yourself take the “pause that refreshes”.

An example of Runic meditation would be along these lines: Say you were faced with a deadline for a project which you didn’t think you could make. During lunch, you found a quiet spot (maybe your car), and relaxed focusing on the Rune Sowelu. This rune embodies the sun and a search for wholeness within. Your breathing slows and you begin to feel a warmth within-much like be kissed by the rays of the sun. After a few minutes, you look around and the murkiness and heaviness that had burdened you has faded. You return to work on the project feeling renewed and confident that, ultimately, this is a task that you can handle.

Whether used to help guide you through an uncertain issue or a source of renewal through meditation, the Runes have their place in your day-to-day world. And, remember, ultimately, there are no accidents.
