We all have heard the phrase “once in a blue moon” used to describe something that only occurs rarely or something unique. On August 31st a blue moon will illuminate the night sky. Yet to those of us who watch the heavens, this astral event carries a much greater symbolism. In order to understand how this dynamic impacts our emotions and actions here on earth, it is important to understand what exactly a “blue moon” is.
The term “blue moon” seems to have been come from an old English proverb from the early 1500s.
From the Oxford Online Etymology Dictionary , the actual couplet is:
“Yf they say the mone is blewe, We must believe that it is true.” (Middle English Spelling)
While there is no certainty as to why importance was attached to the color blue, the term “blue moon” referred to something unusual or rare. In terms of the calendar, a “blue moon” has been identified as the second full moon in a month. Alternatively, the term has been used to describe the third, or extra full moon in a season that has four full moons instead of three. This lunar duplicity occurs roughly every three years. The last previous blue moon as New Year’s Eve, 2009 and the next will not occur until July 31, 2015.
The power of the full moon has a huge impact on our inner emotions and the spiritual tides that ebb and flow much as the great oceans of the planet. For the ancients, the appearance of the full moon signified a time to reap that which was sown during the new moon, a time that matters of the spirit could be illuminated with Luna’s light and permit our feelings to sweep us along as the high tide. For health care workers, both of the past and today, the full moon marked and continues to mark a time of beginnings (births) and endings (death) more than any other time of the month.
The appearance of a second full moon in a month magnifies these primal energies three-fold. To the ancients, this was a time for meditation and communion with the Universe. The ancient Celts, for example, called this the Elder Moon and marked it as a time to review your successes and failures that had occurred since the previous Blue (Elder Moon) and to set new life goals to follows.
The upcoming blue moon promises to enhance many of the passions surrounding our world view even more sharply than they currently are. On all levels, international, financial, and political, many of the seeds recently sown will be reaped and the emotional harvest will be intense. On a personal level, passions could run the gamut from rekindling romantic fires, to jealousy, to possible outbursts of anger breeching the levies of sanity.
Above all, we will be reminded that we are children of the moon and in the thrall of her energies now magnified by her second full-faced appearance in the night sky in the course of a month. Mark well the time and allow the connection with the cosmos to guide your steps.
