While there is no certainty as to why importance was attached to the color blue, the term “blue moon” referred to something unusual or rare. In terms of the calendar, a “blue moon” has been identified as the second full moon in a month. Alternatively, the term has been used to describe the third, or extra full moon in a season that has four full moons instead of three. This lunar duplicity occurs roughly every three years. The last previous blue moon as New Year’s Eve, 2009 and the next will not occur until July 31, 2015.
The power of the full moon has a huge impact on our inner emotions and the spiritual tides that ebb and flow much as the great oceans of the planet. For the ancients, the appearance of the full moon signified a time to reap that which was sown during the new moon, a time that matters of the spirit could be illuminated with Luna’s light and permit our feelings to sweep us along as the high tide.
